Things That Distract Me From Reading

Fact: I don't like coffee. I just like saying Coffee Clutch in my best and deepest New York accent. Considering I'm a New Yorker, I'm pretty freaking good at it. So I've got my tea and I hope you have your heated beverage of choice, because it's time to gab the day away.

I don't always get as much reading done as I'd like. Sometimes I wonder what I'm doing to keep me from getting the work done. Obviously there's hanging out with friends and whatever works I have to get done. But since I'm funempolyed and most of my friends are employed, aside from running errands and job hunting, I don't have much to do.

So what's keeping me from getting my reading done? I'll tell you.

1. Television/Movies
I've recently binged The Office and Parks & Recreactions. All in like 3 weeks. It's disturbing and I hate myself. Game of Thrones is next. I think. Unless you guys have better suggestions. But don't give me suggestions because I should really get back to reading. (No. Actually. Tell me what to watch.) Also, I really like watching lots and lots of movies. I happen to a own a lot of DVDs.

I also like to eat popcorn when I watch movies.
2. Creeping around the Interwebs
I spend way too much time on Twitter. And Facebook. And Instagram. And wishing there was more stuff on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stare at mindlessly. I don't know what's wrong with me but I'll open my computer with the intent to send a couple of emails (I don't like to write emails from my phone) and I'll be on it for hours. Basically the World Wide Web is an enormous time suck. Please send help.

3. Games
I wish I was talking about board games. I mean, it would be board games if I had 2-3 people at my disposal to play Settlers of Catan with whenever I wanted. But I'm mostly talking about Candy Crush. And Words with Friends. Oh Candy Crush and Words with Friends. How I love you both.

4. Lurking about Bookstores
I don't NEED anymore books. And most of the time when I go to bookstores, I don't even WANT anymore books. Or I do but I really can't spend the cash. But sometimes I'll just hang out there. I won't even read. I'll just spend way too much time petting the pretties like a freak. Or following Jen around because she works at my Barnes & Noble and I love her. (HI JEN! *waves*)

5. Sleeping too much
If I have to wake up early, I'll take a nap. If I don't have to wake up early, I'll stay up way too late and sleep waywayway too late. I don't regret it. I love sleep. And even once I wake up, I'll just lie there for a little bit because my bed is comfy and I'm not even slightly compelled to do a single thing. I know. I'm normal.

Okay. I'll stop here before this becomes too much like Family Feud (even though there are a million other things that keep me from getting to the books I really, really want to get to). But yeah.

I hope I'm not the only one who is constantly distracted by a trillion things. Please let me know about your distractions in the comments below. Not that I need more, I just want to feel better about myself.

  1. I completely agree with #1 and #2. My sister watches tv shows as fast as I read and she always recommends new shows to watch. I end up watching full seasons per day and it really stops me from reading. I also get so distracted by the internet. I'd be reading a book and suddenly I'd think "Did I check my email today?" and then checking my email would become a priority. After the email checking, I would end up surfing the web. It sucks but hopefully we'll be able to conquer our distractions soon. Great discussion post and thanks for sharing :)

  2. The internet is DEFINITELY a big distraction for me. I just love Twitter! And reading blogs and ... and ...

I think that updates on my phone add to the problem because getting that constant ding for different apps or my email always tear me away from what I'm reading. AND TV! I love fall TV! It was great in the summer because there really weren't any shows that we watched but with fall coming ... I'll have to do lots of scheduling for my time!

  3. I relate to this list a lot. Sleep? YOU ARE GLORIOUS?! TV?! LET ME MARATHON YOU ALL DAY LONG. But I promise you, you are not alone. With me? NEVAR.

  4. I love this! Work. Real life work distracts me and gets in my way of reading :( Also, if I'm not super into the book I legit just zone out...and stare off into space...normal.

  5. Omg sleeping! I have lots I need to do (PhD candidate D:), but none of it has super close deadlines (or any deadlines aside from the ones I set...), so there isn't any huge push to get up in the morning as long as I don't have class.... It's kind of a problem since I really should get up and put in 10 hour days *sigh*

  6. Just because you contained THREE Spongebob gifs in your post, you are officially awesome. *gives awesome badge* I agree with everything you say, especially about the internet. Sometimes, I don't even know why I'm not reading, and lately this has happened more because I'm suffering from a case of Book Reading Slump. Either that or I'm just lazy. Lovely post!

  7. Haha, I really recognize myself in this.

    1. I've watched 3 season from Game of Thrones in less than 2 weeks (so recommended!) I also love Big Bang Theory, New Girl, The Tudors and Once upon a time. Watching TV shows and movies consumes a lot of time.
    2. Internet, yep. I'm not sure what it is, but I always think 'I'm going to check my mail' and before I know it it's 4 hours later and I'm watching lame things on youtube :p
    3. Games, check. Most of the games I talk about are games like Assassins creed on the PS3.

and I look far too much for new books. It's an addiction.

  8. This post is seriously the story of my life right now. Last week I was on a Grey's Anatomy kick and watched like twenty episodes in a row while doing nothing else. I also have a love affair with tumblr that takes up a LARGE amount of my time. Like, I spend hours and hours and hours on tumblr. And staring at Twitter. And watching cats riding roombas on YouTube. It's an issue.

  9. I get distracted by TV and games too - I'm also watching The Office at the moment, along with Orange is the New Black. And back in June I marathoned all of Parks and Recreation in less than a week...

  10. The Internet is probably what eats most of my time. I'm always doing something, whether it's blog stuff, or scrolling through buzzfeed (seriously, I cannot get enough of that site) or watching youtube video after youtube video.

  11. I love this list a lot! I think the main reason I don't get around to reading sometimes is definitely SLEEP. I love my sleep. I adore, adore, adore being asleep, and just indulge when I can (like during this vacation time I'm having). But the internet would be a close second!

  12. I love this list! This was me this evening: planned to read, yet ended up checking Twitter, working on my blog and cleaning out my bloglovin reader. SO I hear ya.

But Game of Thrones is AWESOME. Get on it.

  13. I totally get distracted by THINGS when I try to read too. You are not alone. If you haven't yet watched it, you MUST WATCH Veronica Mars. It's a requirement of life.
