Sometimes there are things I don't like to read about. Not all of these are absolute. I've been known to consider books with religious themes and angels. Absentee parents make me slightly ragey but I might still like the book. I sometimes very much enjoy books with predictable plots. There's also the very occasional love triangle or ugly cover I'll take a chance on. But I tend to shy away from books with these kinds of plots. Y'know, if we were dating, the books would be the boys and these themes would be facts about the guy that make me think twice or take off running. Maybe I'm being too judgmental. Maybe I need an endorsement from a friend. But I need
something, once these Top Ten Turn Offs are brought to life.
Do you have similar turn off? Maybe you like the things I've listed. That's okay. More boys... erm, books, to go around! Just be sure to share your turn offs in the comments below!
Ahhh, I LOVE vampires! And incest? Ewww. That would make me uncomfortable while reading, I think. And I'm sometimes okay with a few questions not be answered, but I usually need ALL THE ANSWERS. Nice list!

I'm not a fan of love triangles either. I don't mind a little bit of religion in my books, but I hate when it becomes preachy. I respect religious differences but I don't wanted it rammed down my throat.
ReplyDeleteI like vampires, but I haven't read anything recently other than Anne Rice, or even Dracula. It's like the market is flooded with candy covered imposters. I like the monstrous quality of them-- I mean they exist to feed off of human blood! I agree with you on the all questions, no answers point though.
ReplyDeleteI love how you did your list. :)

HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR THING ALL PRETTY YOU TALENTED PERSON
ReplyDeleteI agree with all ten of your things. SO much.
BOO vampires! Totally over them unless there's something totally new.
ReplyDeleteOo no answers is one that I should have included! I'm such a curious person that I want to know all about the magic system/fantasy critters/etc by the end of the series. I'm okay with questions remaining throughout the series, but eventually!
ReplyDeleteI like how you set this up. Looks really good. Great list.

Ditto on the cheating! Seriously, I hate it!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I definitely agree with #10 "All questions, no answers!" ugly covers & love triangles I really can't handle!

Ugly covers are such a dealbreaker for me. I know I should look beyond the packaging, but I want my books to be pretty. I'm okay with angels. There are some interesting things about their mythology, but of course that's often dumbed down in favour of pretty boy angels with shimmery wings. Religion and vampires are a definite no for me, but I can tolerate the rest if I'm in a really good mood. Rare, but it happens.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your idea that absentee parents are a reading turn-off, but I also think that they can be very important to certain books. If the plot line is focused on the parent leaving, then I am ok with it. However, in a dystopian, science-fiction, or fantasy book, absentee parents just make me sad and depressed.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Check out mine: http://booksavvyblog.blogspot.com/
Haha, ugly covers made my list too -- I felt kind of shallow typing it, but it's so TRUE!
ReplyDeleteI agree entirely with your list. Except for vampires. I will still read them because I am a huge sucker for vampires. I MADE A PUN!
